Treatments

Treatments Available

I offer a wide range of professional services to meet your foot care needs.

General Chiropody/Podiatry

I provide general chiropody/podiatry appointments for conditions such as corns, callouses, nail cutting, problematic nails, in grown toenails, verrucas, fungal nail infections, skin conditions etc. I also provide treatments for those with high risk foot problems eg those with diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis etc

This is especially important for those who may have difficulty getting down to their feet, or for those with poor eyesight.

I can also offer nail surgery, Lacuna (a very effective treatment for fungal nail infections and Pedisafe (a medical grade nail reconstruction). Please click the above links for further details.

A full medical history is taken on your first appointment along with a foot health assessment.

Nail Surgery

If left too long a painful nail may develop into an ingrown toe nail and may require nail surgery. This may involve the full nail or one/both sides of the nail being removed.

You will need an assessment appointment prior to the surgery to see if you are suitable for the surgery, to discuss all options and give you time to ask any questions.

The procedure is performed in the clinic under a local anaesthetic. Depending on the procedure needed the full nail or section/s will be removed and a chemical will be applied to prevent this part of the nail to regrow. The full appointment generally takes about 1 hour and you will walk out the clinic at the end of the procedure. Most people go about their normal routine the following day.

I will see you through from start to finish, all follow up appointments are included in the surgery price.

Diabetic/other high risk foot groups.

If you have diabetes or any other high risk conditions then you probably will have been told how important it is to look after your feet.

I can provide regular treatments to improve and/or prevent any foot problems that may develop. I will be able to check your circulation (manually and by using a dopplar) and your sensation, as well as looking for other changes with your feet.

Remember regular appointments with a qualified podiatrist will prevent foot problems occuring.

WHY LACUNA?

Podiatrists have been researching new methods to treat fungal nail infections and they found that making small holes within the nail (fenestration) and applying an anti fungal spray has proved to give very effective results. This has been named The Lacuna Method. Lacuna means ‘an unfilled space’, ‘a cavity or depression’.

The Lacuna Method involves drilling multiple holes across the fungal area. We then apply Lamisil directly into the holes and across the nail plate. You would then continue this at home on a daily basis and return in 6 weeks for a review.

Not all patients are suitable for the Lacuna method, so an assessment appointment is needed before any treatment can begin.

It is relatively painless and no anaesthetic is required. Patients say that when we drill the holes it feels equivalent to a pin prick sensation. Treatment time takes around 45 minutes (depending on the number of toes affected and the number of holes required).

Lamisil is a anti-fungal drug that is also known as terbinafine. Terbinafine works to create an imbalance in the fungal cell wall, this then causes fungal cell death so it is known as a ‘Fungicidal’ drug. To ensure this treatment works patients must apply the spray daily along with other foot care.

See Picture on right.  Pic 1 is on the first day (you can see where the holes have been drilled) and other pictures are 6 weeks apart. Pic 4 shows a lovely healthy nail.

WHY PEDISAFE?

PEDISAFE is an amazing medical grade toenail reconstruction system, to help patients get their self-confidence back. PEDISAFE can be used for:

  • Reconstruction
  • Ingrown relief
  • Crooked nail realignment
  • Preventative overlay
  • Prosthetic toenail, for those missing a toenail.

Why PEDISAFE compared to an acrylic toenail?

  • Pedisafe contains polymers that are flexible & can withstand the forces a toe goes through on a daily basis.
  • The application and removal of a PEDISAFE nail is kinder & more gentle to the nail bed.
  • PEDISAFE 'grows' with the nail & can be painted, filed or left naked (I can match your natural nail colour).
  • PEDISAFE lasts longer, on average 6-8 weeks rather than days.
  • Can be used on nails damaged due to trauma, surgery or fungal involvement & supports the growth of a new nail. A fungal nail infection can also be treated while the nail is on.
  • Acrylic nails have been known to develop fungal/yeast infections under the nail, the PEDISAFE system can be used while treating a fungal nail infection.

Insoles/orthoses

I stock a number of quality cusomisable orthoses & cushioning insoles.

Podiatrists use orthotics to treat foot problems such as plantar fasciitis, bursitis, tendinitis, diabetic foot ulcers, and foot, ankle, and heel pain.

Cushioning insoles are ideal for those with arthritis or to give more cushioning in your every day shoes.
